Computer Vision Syndrome can be diagnosed through a comprehensive eye examination. Testing, with special emphasis on visual requirements at the computer working distance, may include:
- Patient history to determine any symptoms the patient is experiencing and the presence of any general health problems, medications taken, or environmental factors that may be contributing to the symptoms related to computer use.
- Visual acuity measurements to assess the extent to which vision may be affected.
- A refraction to determine the appropriate lens power needed to compensate for any refractive errors (nearsightedness, farsightedness or astigmatism).
- Testing how the eyes focus, move and work together. In order to obtain a clear, single image of what is being viewed, the eyes must effectively change focus, move and work in unison. This testing will look for problems that keep your eyes from focusing effectively or make it difficult to use both eyes together.
This testing may be done without the use of eye drops to determine how the eyes respond under normal seeing conditions. In some cases, such as when some of the eyes’ focusing power may be hidden, eye drops may be used. They temporarily keep the eyes from changing focus while testing is done.Using the information obtained from these tests, along with results of other tests, your optometrist can determine if you have Computer Vision Syndrome and advise you on treatment options.

Viewing a computer screen often makes the eyes work harder. As a result, the unique characteristics and high visual demands of computer viewing make many individuals susceptible to the development of vision-related symptoms.Viewing a computer screen is different than reading a printed page. Often the letters on the computer screen are not as precise or sharply defined, the level of contrast of the letters to the background is reduced, and the presence of glare and reflections on the screen may make viewing difficult.Viewing distances and angles used for computer work are also often different from those commonly used for other reading or writing tasks. As a result, the eye focusing and eye movement requirements for computer viewing can place additional demands on the visual system. In addition, the presence of even minor vision problems can often significantly affect comfort and performance at a computer. Uncorrected or under corrected vision problems can be major contributing factors to computer-related eyestrain.Even people who have an eyeglass or contact lens prescription may find it’s not suitable for the specific viewing distances of their computer screen. Some people tilt their heads at odd angles because their glasses aren’t designed for looking at a computer. Or they bend toward the screen in order to see it clearly. Their postures can result in muscle spasms or pain in the neck, shoulder or back.In most cases, symptoms of CVS occur because the visual demands of the task exceed the visual abilities of the individual to comfortably perform them. At greatest risk for developing CVS are those persons who spend two or more continuous hours at a computer every day.

Computer Vision Syndrome describes a group of eye and vision-related problems that result from prolonged computer use. Many individuals experience eye discomfort and vision problems when viewing a computer screen for extended periods. The level of discomfort appears to increase with the amount of computer use.The most common symptoms associated with Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS) are
- eyestrain
- headaches
- blurred vision
- dry eyes
- neck and shoulder pain
These symptoms may be caused by:
- poor lighting
- glare on the computer screen
- improper viewing distances
- poor seating posture
- uncorrected vision problems
- a combination of these factors
The extent to which individuals experience visual symptoms often depends on the level of their visual abilities and the amount of time spent looking at the computer screen. Uncorrected vision problems like farsightedness and astigmatism, inadequate eye focusing or eye coordination abilities, and aging changes of the eyes, such as presbyopia, can all contribute to the development of visual symptoms when using a computer. Many of the visual symptoms experienced by computer users are only temporary and will decline after stopping computer work. However, some individuals may experience continued reduced visual abilities, such as blurred distance vision, even after stopping work at a computer. If nothing is done to address the cause of the problem, the symptoms will continue to recur and perhaps worsen with future computer use.Prevention or reduction of the vision problems associated with Computer Vision Syndrome involves taking steps to control lighting and glare on the computer screen, establishing proper working distances and posture for computer viewing, and assuring that even minor vision problems are properly corrected.

From stainless steel to aluminum alloy, metal has been a popular choice in eyeglass frame material. Generally, these materials are sturdy and lightweight. Molded into different styles and colors, mental eyeglasses present a contemporary look.Acetate or mixed material eyeglass frames are extremely lightweight and durable. Its skin-care feature prevents skin allergy. In addition, acetate exists in many colors, so such eyeglass frames never fade. Another great advantage is that a pair of eyeglass frames can present two or more colors, making your eyeglasses fashionable and unique.Traditionally, plastic eyeglass frames are lightweight and hypoallergenic. Advancements in the manufacture and blending of different materials make plastic less breakable and more durable. Plastic frames are perfect for the popular wrap-around styles.Titanium frames are extremely lightweight, durable and hypoallergenic. Titanium is easy to color, resulting in a polished, modern look. Titanium frames are the perfect frames for active lifestyles or heavy prescriptions. Most classic frames are made of titanium.Made from one of the most flexible metals on the planet, memory mental frames can return to original shape even after twisting or bending. They are lightweight, durable and functional with fashionable styling.Rimless glasses are lenses, temples, the nose bridge, and nothing more; the lenses attach directly to the temples. Exclusive temples, with a detail on the flexible nose bridge, make eyeglasses reliable and as lightweight as you can imagine.
Semi-rimless frames only cover half the lens. A wire or screw connects the lenses to the temples. Lighter than full-rim eyeglasses and more durable than rimless eyeglasses, semi-rimless eyeglasses are a balance between durability and weight.

The cylinder for my left eye is -.87 x 140. Zenni and Goggles4u told me to enter the closest value, i.e. either -.75 or -1. I did this on Zenni using the -.75 and the glasses (2 pair, 1 bifocal, 1 progressive photochromatic) are actually much cheaper than the $490 dollar ones I got from the local optician. Goggles4u couldn’t do my prescription since they don’t make anything over -8 sphere except in single vision high index. I have also ordered from Glassesshop and LBW, both were able to accommodate my prescription exactly. Glassesshop did a good job and has outstanding customer service and good prices and nice frames but check with them first to make sure they have the lens blanks in stock. They told me they could only make progressives in my prescription in Varilux Physio 360’s for $59. Still this is almost 10% of what my local optician charges for these lenses. Glassesshop was the only place I found that could make trifocals (you have to email or use Live Chat and they email you a bill for the order) and, once again, at a very good price. Still waiting on LBW after sending 2 pair back (one wrong frame color, the second they TOTALLY screwed up n the lenses–their fault!) but their customer service is decent and the frames were very nice. FrameDirect also told me they could make my glasses but when push came to shove they said they were ‘out of stock” of the needed lens blanks for either bifocals or progressives and could only make me single vision. Once again their customer service was disappointment. Out of all the ones I have tried I have been most pleased with Glasseshop, since though the prescription is exact and the price is cheap. I actually see out of them better than any of the other glasses I have, including the (very expensive) ones from my local optician. Perhaps if you posted your prescription we can see exactly what you are talking about.

If you haven’t already, seems like it would useful to check the PD value. That is, papillary distance. As I understand it, the following three things should coincide: (1) the distance between your pupils when looking at a distant object, (2) the value for PD you supplied to online shops when you ordered, and (3) the distance between the optical centers of the lenses in the glasses they sent you.
(3) is the toughest to determine, in my opinion. I looked at some previous posts here where it was said that the thinnest point of the lens is the optical center, but when I look at my glasses, I can’t tell where this is. Maybe someone can help us out, here.

I don’t want to rain on the on line glasses parade, but I’m having much less success with this than many of you seem to have. I first bought 4 pairs of glasses, one regular and three sunglasses from opitcal4less. The price was great and the quality of the frames was fine. However, when I wore the glasses, the prescription just didn’t feel right and my eyes fatigued.
I thought maybe my prescription had changed, so I had it checked. It had changed a bit, but not substantially. Even so, I bought another pair of glasses from opical4less, which unfortunately for me now placed me in the higher cost lens due to a cylinder lower than -2.75. That pair is working out reasonably well, though I still get a bit of fatigue toward the end of the day in my left eye.
Since the extra $59 was a bit prohibitive at opitical4less, I tried out Goggles4U for another pair of sunglasses. I got bendable titanium with 70% grey tint. I guess I misunderstood what 70% meant because they are only very lightly shaded so won’t really function as sunglasses. Also, the prescription just doesn’t feel right when looking though both lens. It’s weird because if I close one eye or the other they both seem OK, but together, just not right. (but not really blurry almost like on the verge of double vision)
I’m not sure how much of this is just my sensitivity to changes in prescription and/or ordering error.
Peter, my best friends in Texas, suggested me try glassesshop and I will do it. After receiving it, I will let you know the results soon.

I ordered their “overstock” price 065 frames for $15, marked down from $29, on April 12, and the glasses arrived 10 days later. Shipping was $8, bringing my total to $23. I got the no-extra-charge 1.56 CR39 lenses. The glasses seem just fine. I could find no problem with the workmanship. I bought them for using the computer, and they work okay for that. I compared the AR coating with glasses I got from Costco, and it seems about the same.
I didn’t get any email from Glassesshop (I did check my spam filter), but I may need it, since they show info about orders on their web site. So I will register next time.
I don’t think I chose the frames very wisely — they’re not wide enough for me. Next time I’ll use the virtual try on platform better. Also, I think I will make a better estimate of how to adjust my prescription for computer glasses. My ADD value is 2.25, and I added on 1.25 for diopters to the SPH value. That seems to clarify my vision most in the range 15-23 inches, but I usually sit about 28 inches from my monitor. Next time I’ll try adding only 0.75 or 1.00 diopters for computer glasses. And I’ll use these ones I just got for cooking — they’re just about right for looking down at my chopping block inches from my monitor. Next time I’ll try adding only 0.75 or 1.00 diopters for computer glasses. And I’ll use these ones I just got for cooking — they’re just about right for looking down at my chopping block.

Why not try www.galssesshop.com immediately? I am surprised no one else has posted about them since they carry very nice models and the prices, although higher than the cheapest (zenni, g4u), are more than reasonable for the kind of glasses they sell. So I am thinking of giving them a try. The shipping much more fast than they promised and I expect.
I also list some online shops as follows.
The frame is much higher quality than I expected. The bifocals are spot on also. I will order another sunglass from them because I plan to use them in the pool and at the beach. So far Glassseshop has been the best of the 4 places I have ordered or tried to order from.
Zenni waited for about 2 weeks before they told me they could not make me progressives or bifocals so I had them refund my money. They had my credit card refund processed in 2 days, however. Framedirect did great on the single vision distance and the computer glasses but could not make the progressives or bifocals I wanted unless I wanted to buy very expensive lens. They could make me trifocals though. While they were expensive they were offering top quality lenses for much less than the brick I use.
Eyebuydirect has not been good so far. I got a pair of photochromatic progressives and a pair of bifocals from then in about two weeks. The bifocals lenses were fine but the frame was the wrong color. The progressives were a disaster! They cut the left lens completely off center so I had about 1/2″ of non optical carrier material going down the left side of the lens. Needless to say I could not see out of them. Their customer support told me to send both pair back. I called them after they received them and they said they looked at them and were going to remake the progressives and put the bifocals in the frame I ordered. I will see how they are when I finally get them. Glasseshop so far has been the most satisfactory internet buying experience. I got what I ordered, the price was excellent, and the quality was much higher than I expected.

I ordered my glasses from Glassesshop and received them in about two weeks. When I first put them on I thought that they had gotten the prescription wrong. So, I e-mailed their customer service to resolve the issues. They suggested that I take the glasses to my optometrist to check the prescription before I send them back for a new pair. I did this and my optometrist said that they were “a hair off but within OSHA standards.” The reason that my optometrist said they were off was because of my astigmatism. He told me to give them a couple weeks of constant wear and that my eyes would get used to them and I would see fine. A couple weeks after wearing them during work my eyes have gotten used to the glasses and everything is great.
A piece of advice for new people: make sure that the measurements are what you want. I thought that arm measurements of 145mm and width measurements of 145mm would fit correctly. I should have shortened the width measurement and lengthened the arm measurement. I will make sure of this with the next pair I order.
